history: In 1990, husband and wife Alice Despard and Bill Stewart rented 2711 Wilson in then-sleepy Clarendon and created the area’s first multi-tap beer bar, calling it Roratonga Rodeo. They soon parted ways, with Alice continuing with Roratonga Rodeo and Bill moving on to create Bardo Rodeo. In 1993, Alice installed a kitchen in what was previously Roratonga’s “tiki room,” remodeled the space and renamed it Galaxy Hut. Alice put a focus on live music, hosting thousands of local and small touring bands at a time when there were few dc-area indie-minded clubs.
In 2005, Galaxy Hut’s late 90′s manager and bartender Lary Hoffman purchased the business, remodeled, put a renewed focus on craft beer and revamped the menu. Most recently, the menu has become all-vegetarian.
